Meet The Artist

Phebe Pankey, an American artist born on May 1, 1997, is widely recognized for her exceptional artwork and dedication to empowering African Americans through her creative vision. She graduated from WSSU with a bachelor's degree in Art in 2019 and has since engaged in conservation and curatorial internships at prestigious institutions like Duke, Fisk, Yale, and Princeton universities, the Winterthur Delaware Estate, and the Georgia O'Keefe Museum. Demonstrating her versatility, Pankey has ventured into the realm of published illustration, offering unique prints of her creations for sale.

With a deep-rooted mission to inspire beauty and empowerment, Pankey has participated in notable group exhibitions and showcased her works at renowned venues such as the Milton Rhodes Center, Diggs Gallery, Touch of Art Studio, and Lycoming College. Her commitment to uplifting her community resonates strongly in her art, which often highlights marginalized individuals and pays tribute to essential professions that have historically strengthened communities.

Inspired by luminaries from the Harlem Renaissance like Aaron Douglas and Jacob Lawrence, Pankey continuously explores the transformative power of art within her community. Her portfolio includes intricate symbolism that brings to life the stories of factory workers, entrepreneurs, politicians, teachers, and lawyers, all crucial figures in bolstering communities. Noteworthy among her accomplishments are three public art installations in Winston Salem as part of the Bus Shelter Project, honoring local heroes and affirming Pankey's legacy as a respected illustrator dedicated to empowerment through art.
